This board is made from reclaimed butcher block countertop. While epoxy is considered food safe if properly cured, it is not safe for cutting or preparing raw food on. I use Promise Epoxy (you can google them) and this is from their FAQ section: Is Table Top Epoxy Food Safe/FDA Approved? The short answer is, yes. When Promise Table Top Epoxy has been measured, mixed, and cured properly it becomes safe, per FDA code, 21CFR175.300 which states “Resinous and polymeric coatings may be safely used as the food-contact surface of articles intended for use in producing, manufacturing, packing, processing, preparing, treating, packaging, transporting, or holding food” and can be used as a “functional barrier between the food and the substrate” and “intended for repeated food-contact use”. Keep in mind that the epoxy surface is not antimicrobial, and will still have to be disinfected after uses that include serving or eating food. I use electricity to create the burns in the wood. I then clean them and pour a layer of pigment tinted epoxy into the voids. The cutting surface and sides are sanded to 320 grit, and the back side of the board is sanded to 200 grit.
